Medicinal Marine Microbiota

Marine biota includes marine microbes, plants, and animals that constitute about 50% of the total world biodiversity, and they have the potential of being a rich source of bioactive compounds that can be beneficial in the prevention of cancer, heart disease, and other diseases. However, the use of marine biota is largely unexplored, especially in the development of new drugs. This new book presents a comprehensive take on the topic of medically important marine microbiota, exploring medicinal compounds of marine microalgae, bacteria, and fungi associated with marine plants and animals. This first-of-its-kind book covers each type of medicinal microbiota in depth. It begins with an introduction to marine microbiota, followed by details on the toxins of marine microalgae and their potential therapeutic applications. It then covers medicinal marine microalgae and their compounds and bioactivities.

Santhanam Ramesh, PhD, is Vice-Principal at the Karuna College of Pharmacy, Kerala University of Health Sciences, India. With 15 years of teaching and research experience in pharmaceutical sciences, he is also a visiting professor at the North-Caucasian State Humanitarian and Technological Academy, Russia. He has 13 books published with internationally reputed publishers.

Ramasamy Santhanam, PhD, is Ex-Dean of the Fisheries College and Research Institute, Tamil Nadu Veterinary and Animal Sciences University, India. With over 50 years of teaching and research experience in marine/fisheries sciences, he served as a fisheries expert for various government and nongovernment organizations in India and abroad. He has published over 40 books on various aspects of marine life.

Arumugam Uma, PhD, is Professor at the Dr. MGR Fisheries College and Research Institute, India. She has 25 years of teaching and research experience in fish immunology and therapeutics and has invented two patented technologies and is a recipient of the Tamil Nadu Young Women Scientist and Best Researcher Award. To her credit, Dr. Uma has published two books and 30 research papers in peer-reviewed journals.

Raju Mohanraju, PhD, is Professor of Ocean Studies and Marine Biology at Pondicherry Central University, India. He has 25 years of teaching and research experience. He has undergone overseas training at the University of Iowa as well as the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution, USA. To his credit, Dr. Mohanraju has 70 research papers published in various peer-reviewed journals of international repute.
