Barnard edited a book entitled Companion to English History. It was on the basis of this useful volume that in 1924 the late Professor H. W. C. Davis edited and revised for the Clarendon Press Medieval England to form part of the series of which Shakespeare's England is probably the best known. After more than half a century the original book, and indeed Davis's revised edition, have become quite out of date. In these circumstances, the new edition has been almost completely rewritten by experts in the subjects with which the chapters deal; only two of the original chapters survive and these have been carefully and thoroughly revised. Though the origi nal plan has been retained, this book is really a new book with some additional chapters discussing aspects of history (such as Medieval Science) which were not included in previous editions.
