Aurora lists a similar document "Meeting of the Merchants of Kingston", April 7, 1837. 2p. Concerns the tariffs to be charged by forwarding companies for transportation of goods via canal. The letters relate the concerns of the tariffs to be charged by forwarding companies for goods via the Saint Lawrence. Traffic on the Saint Lawrence had greatly increased exacerbated by the limiting access to the Rideau Canal due to a monopoly by the Ottawa and Rideau Forwarding Company. This would not be rectified until the government construction of the Ste. Anne-de-Bellevue Canal opened the Ottawa River to trade in 1843. Seller Inventory # 39359
