About the Author

Ernst Theodor Amadeus Hofmann, geboren am 24. Januar 1776 in K�nigsberg, war ein deutscher Schriftsteller der Romantik. Er starb am 25.Juni 1822 in Berlin. Wie der Vater auch wurde Hofmann zun�chst Jurist, bet�tigte sich aber nebenbei als Musiker, Schriftsteller und Zeichner. Nach einer gl�cklosen Zeit am Theater in Bamberg unter anderem als Kapellmeister und Musikkritiker konnte Hofmann 1814 in den Staatsdienst zur�ckkehren. Zur gleichen Zeit hatte er sich bereits einen bescheidenen, aber eintr�glichen Erfolg als Schriftsteller erwerben k�nnen.
