First Edition; 8vo; 13x18cm; pp. [xiv], 304, some b/w illustrations; 4 pages of book ads, portrait frontispiece, with tissue paper; folding map of South America, re-backed, map has small closed tear, original brown boards with ornate blind stamp and gilt illustrations, title in gilt on spine; fixed front endpaper has presentation paper attached, purple ink library stamp from Ward Room, Royal Naval Barracks, Chatham on half title page, some foxing to pages; a good copy. Stephens life was full and included the Hango massacre, Chinese Taku Forts 1860, Slave trade, Baltic Blockade, Chinese war of 1860. Illustrations include Lake Titicaca in Peru, Arab slave dhow, Beagle Channel, Tierra Del Fuego. Presentation paper on front endpaper is to Royal Naval Barracks Chatham by Prince Of Leiningen.
