Synopsis
Seth Warner was born in Woodbury,Conn. in 1743. He moved to Vermont in 1763, and was noted for his great hunting skills. Warner was a cousin of Ethan Allen, and both, nephews of Remember Baker. Together the three opposed all who got in the way of what was to become the Independent State of Vermont.
About the Author
Hon. Daniel Chipman,LL.D was born in Salisbury, Connecticut, October 22, 1765, and moved to Tinmouth, Vermont at age 10. He labored on the family farm until entering Dartmouth College in 1784. Upon graduation, he entered into the study of law and was admitted to the bar in 1790. He practiced law in Rutland & later in Middlebury, Vermont. Mr. Chipman represented Middlebury in the General Assembly for several years. He was elected Speaker of the House in 1813, in which position he is said to have been distinguished for his promptness and decision. In 1814, he was elected to Congress, but resigned after one session due to illness. In 1828, he moved his family to Ripton, Vermnot, retired from public life and began preparing several works for the press, The Memoir of Seth Warner being one of them. He died April 23, 1850, in his 85th year. At a meeting of the bar of Addison County, the following December, resolutions, highly commendatory of the character of Mr. Chipman, "as a lawyer, a statesman, and a man of letters," were passed by that body, and ordered to be entered into the records of the court.
