Memoirs of a Banking House Ed. by R. Chambers

Memoirs Of A Banking House Ed. By R. Chambers by William Forbes is a detailed historical memoir recounting the ascent, operation, and evolution of a prominent Scottish private banking house. The work intertwines personal biography with institutional history, tracing the origins of the Edinburgh house Coutts Brothers & Co., its London connections, and the long arc from private mercantile banking to established banking practice. Forbes, who rose from apprentice to head of the house, provides an intimate account of family partnerships, key personalities, and pivotal crises—from the Coutts family lineage and early partnerships, through the 1760s reconfigurations, to the upheavals of the 1772 and later periods. The narrative blends prudence, frugality, and integrity with the social and economic forces shaping Scotland’s commercial life, illustrating how small beginnings and careful management yielded enduring credit and social prestige. It also documents interactions with contemporaries and figures of Scotland’s mercantile era, offering a rare window into private banking in the eighteenth century.
