Item description from seller

A scarce two volume set of this English translation of Baron de Tott's memoirs. A scarce early English edition. Three parts in two volumes. Translated from the original French. Uniformly bound in full tree calf with gilt detail. The interesting memoirs of François Baron de Tott, the eighteenth century French military officer. As a lieutenant in the French army, he travelled to Constantinople in the Ottoman Empire where he was to learn the language and customs of the Turkish people. He was later asked to do the same for Crimea, alongside aiding the rebellion against Russia. Volume one is missing the title page. In its place, there is a half title page for 'Part the Second'. There is no half title page in volume two. With a bookplate for, 'Sir John Eden Bar', to the front paste-downs. Uniformly bound in full tree calf binding. Externally, smart with rubbing to the extremities. Slight darkening to the spine. Light marks to the boards. Offsetting to the paste-downs and free endpapers. Bookplate to the front paste-down of both volumes. Closed tear to the front free endpaper of volume two. Hinges strained but firm. Internally, firmly bound. Volume one is missing the title page. Spotting and offsetting throughout, heavier towards the front and rear of the books, however the text is still bright and clear. Very Good. …
