The work sets out to describe the state and condition of the Royal Navy and its ships from 1485 to 1805, concentrating on the period 1702-1805, with numerous tables and abstracts giving the rate, class of ship, guns, and burthen. In the preface the author states.My principal object has been to shew the state of the Navy, as to the number, tonnage, etc. of several classes of the Ships and vessels at different periods; when the Naval force was promoted, neglected-or, at least, not augmented; and at what periods improvements in Ship-building were introduced into it.
