Men Do Stay: Recruiting and Retaining Qualified Male Early Childhood Teachers

Dr. Calvin E. Moore, Jr., once again has authored a book that focuses on improving the lives of young children. This insightful look at the retention of male early childhood teachers offers early childhood programs meaningful recruitment strategies and dispels the notion that male teachers leave the field. Dr. Moore walks the reader through a comparative case study that he conducted of five male early childhood teachers that chose to stay in the field despite pressures from society to leave. Together he and the reader learn from these men how to build strong early childhood programs that recruit and retain qualified male early childhood teachers. This books is a deeply personal journey for Dr. Moore because he began his storied career as a male teacher assistant in a Head Start program in Birmingham, Alabama where this study was conducted. Dr. Moore currently lives in Birmingham, Alabama. I hold a family child care CDA, a BS degree in early childhood education from the University of Alabama at Birmingham, a MS in Education degree and a PhD in Early Childhood Education from Walden University. My dissertation was on Male Early Childhood Teachers and the Sociological Factors Impacting Their Retention. He has written an early childhood curriculum supplement, The Thinking Book Curriculum for Early Childhood Professionals. He is currently the Child Care Services Division Director for the Alabama Department of Human Resources.
