Dei romanzi precedenti la trilogia (costituita da "Molloy", "Malone muore", "L'Innominabile"), "Mercier e Camier" è senza dubbio il meno significativo. Tuttavia può costituire un buon punto di partenza per esplorare questa fase della produzione beckettiana. È, infatti, più divertente di "Murphy" (sebbene meno profondo) e a differenza di "Watt" - decisamente più complesso e articolato nella sua struttura - presenta una vena picaresca che risolleva l'esilità della trama. Senza contare che - essendo il primo romanzo di Beckett scritto in francese - rappresenta la prima opera di ampio respiro in cui lo scrittore si cimentò con il nuovo idioma.Titolo originario dell'opera: "Mercier et Camier". Traduzione di Luigi Buffarini.
