The Merry Order of St. Bridget: Personal Recollections of the Use of the Rod

The Merry Order Of St. Bridget: Personal Recollections Of The Use Of The Rod by Margaret Anson. The book is an epistolary account told in first person by a maid who narrates her experiences at a French country house where a secret society of fashionable women disciplines themselves and their staff with the rod. Through a series of letters and chapters the narrator describes lavish rooms, extravagant dress, and elaborate ceremonies including initiation, flagellation, and the training of a page. The narrative follows the rise of the Merry Order, notable figures such as the Princesse Z, Mme Hautville, Lady C, and Mrs. D, and the progression from playful practice to more serious discipline, conjugal scenes, and social upheaval. The letters blend memoir and sensational fiction to explore themes of power, sexuality, secrecy, and class within a decadent milieu. Although stylized as personal recollections, the volume stages a critique of aristocratic privilege, as the narrator confesses both fascination and ambivalence toward the rituals she describes. The work culminates in a dramatic exposure that ends the clandestine proceedings and returns the narrator and others to England.
