A first edition copy of this delightful collection of extracts from Oscar Wilde's poetry, accompanied by illustrations from Mervyn Peake. The first edition of this work in the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Extracts from eleven of Oscar Wilde's poems, illustrated with sixteen illustrations by the writer and artist Mervyn Peake (1911-1968), with a foreword by Peake's wife, Maeve Gilmore. To the rear are four extracts from poems by Mervyn Peake. In 1945, Peake received a commission to illustrate this collection of extracts from the poems of Oscar Wilde. Unfortunately, due to paper and printing restrictions at this time, Peake's illustrations were not reproduced to an adequate standard. This book is the first publication of all Peake's illustrations for the poems in book form. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with the original unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, cloth is very smart. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Dust wrapper remains smart and bright except for sunning to the spine. Fine. Seller Inventory # 907M5

This book is published by Sidgwick and Jackson, UK, 1980. First edition. The illustrations were commissioned in 1945 yet this is the first time they have appeared in book form. Mervyn Peake, author of the 'Gormenghast' novels who died in 1968. Maeve Gilmore was his widow. The dustjacket on this copy is bright and glossy and not price clipped. Very good edges and tips. The back is lightly sun toned in part but overall, very good. The boards are smart, black with gilt titles to spine. Contents: printed on lovely Antique Laid paper. PLEASE NOTE: there are light age spots to the front few pages and some handling marks to a few pages otherwise the contents are bright with no writing etc. The illustrations are striking.
