The mesolimbic system is a forebrain neural pathway which utilizes dopamine as its principal neurotransmitter. This pathway has become one of the most heavily researched areas of the brain particularly in relation to its potential involvement in major psychiatric disorders such as schizophrenia, depression and addiction. Providing a multidisciplinary synthesis of current knowledge of the mesolimbic system, this book addresses, on the one hand, the anatomical, pharmacological and physiological basis of its functioning and, on the other, its role in normal and abnormal behavior.
