Octavo. Inscribed by author to Dr. C.W.P. Brock. Bookplate of James M. Clift, Director of the Masonic Library of Roanoke. 167p. Bound in with the following parts: Governor's Message to the James River and Kanawha Company; the Governor's speech at Danville (1871); Governor's Message on State Boundary Lines (1872) ; also is his list of reprieves and forgeries, including commuting W. Ruffin from Hanging to Life imprisonment (as he notes "nearly idiotic"), or Lizzie Anderson of Richmond (colored) convicted of forgery and sentence to two years but since she was only 13 or 14 reduced to 90 days, sixteen cases with governor's reason which showed some compassion especially for those he noted as colored, mental deficiency or very young. Several other years of the governor's term have similar fascinating lists. Bound in dark blue cloth. spine lettering gilt, light wear to spine ends. A very good copy. Seller Inventory # 013850
