Metaphorically Speaking (Paperback or Softback)

Edited and formatted by Stephanie Lamb and published by Quillkeepers Press, Metaphorically Speaking brings together a sweeping tapestry of international literary talent. Spanning essays, flash fiction, memoirs, short stories, and poetry, this anthology explores how metaphor helps us articulate truths that standard language often fails to reach.

The collection opens with evocative prose and short fiction that examine human connection and life's pivotal transitions. Jeffrey Beck's memoir essay, The Patchwork Self, frames personal history as a hand-stitched quilt where every joy, failure, and mended edge shapes character. Moving into themes of ambition and sacrifice, Emma Kennedy's A Cambridge Success captures the quiet emotional weight and triumph of academic accomplishment amidst family strain. Susan L. Lipson's A Gifted Desk illuminates the unexpected friction and unspoken emotions behind acts of generosity, while Aravinda Garimella's The Apple Tree examines family dynamics, maternal distance, and sudden change through the metaphor of a split fruit tree. The prose selection further explores raw vulnerability in Robin's Shen, which blends Chinese medicine with postpartum life, alongside pieces by Tabitha Bast (The Cigarette), Nadia Manuel (Rain), and Rajeshwar Prasad (Winter's End, Spring's Honour) that navigate relationship strain, nonconformity, and standing firmly in moral integrity.

The poetry and prose sections weave together reflections on nature, war, grief, body image, and hope. From Adena M'lynn Harmon's silent peeling wallpaper to Kate Adams' planetary conjunctions, Cody Draco's winding rivers, and Deirdre Garr Johns' meditation on safety and identity, each author offers a unique lens on survival and beauty. Ultimately, Metaphorically Speaking serves as both a testament to individual storytelling and a celebrated mosaic of global human experience.
