Metaphysical Elements (Classic Reprint)

Explore the life and thought of Proclus, a late antique Platonist who shaped a theocratic form of Platonism.

This edition traces his rise from Plato’s academy to a unified theological philosophy.

Beginning with his early education in Alexandria and Athens, the book recounts how Proclus studied Aristotle, then joined Syrianus as a devoted student and companion. It highlights his intense scholarly discipline, prolific lectures, and enduring commitment to harmonizing ancient theologies. The narrative emphasizes his moral and intellectual development, showing how study, reflection, and virtuous living guided his ascent into the higher realms of philosophy.

Readers will gain a clear view of Proclus’ approach to Platonic theology, the role of initiation and mystery in his thought, and the way he sought to align diverse beliefs into a coherent system. The text also situates Proclus within the broader tradition of Neoplatonism, tracing influences from Plato, Aristotle, and earlier teachers to his own synthetic vision.

• A concise biography of Proclus and his intellectual lineage
• An approachable account of his philosophical method and beliefs
• Context for his place in Neoplatonism and Platonist thought
• Discussion of his lectures, writings, and practical approach to philosophy
