Metaphysics and the Existence of God

Metaphysics and the Existence of God, originally published in 1960, remains a classic text in modern Thomistic philosophy. Thomas C. O’Brien, O.P., provides an incisive analysis of the relationship between the existence of God and the science of metaphysics according to the sapiential teaching of St. Thomas Aquinas. The author also offers critical engagement with the thought of significant figures associated with the Thomist tradition such as Dominic of Flanders, Cardinal Cajetan, Chrysostom Javelli, John of St. Thomas, Joseph Gredt, and Etienne Gilson.

The first volume in the Thomist Tradition series, Metaphysics and the Existence of God is a key resource for all serious students of Thomas Aquinas and the Thomist tradition.

Thomas C. O’Brien, O.P., was a leading authority on the works of Thomas Aquinas and the Thomist tradition. He served as co-editor of the 60-volume English translation of Aquinas’s Summa Theologiae originally published by McGraw-Hill.

Cajetan Cuddy, O.P., serves as the general editor of Cluny Media’s Thomist Tradition book series. He is the co-author (with Romanus Cessario, O.P.) of Thomas and the Thomists: The Achievement of Thomas Aquinas and his Interpreters (Fortress, 2017).
