In good condition. Remains of wrapper on spine, sewn bound. Title page is toned, dusty with light dampness staining. Lightly foxed with a 1 1/2 chip at lower corner. Some pages uncut, slight tears to edges as a result. Folding table at page 45 in good working order. Edges untrimmed, toned. Occasional light foxing throughout. Old hand notations of Lox on pages 16-17. Beautiful script. Please see photos. Scarce and very rare pamphlet by William Lax (1761-1836). Lax was an English astronomer and mathematician who served as Lowndean Professor of Astronomy and Geometry at the University of Cambridge for forty-one years. Lax was admitted a Fellow of the Royal Society on April 5th, 1796. He was nominee by the Astronomer Royal Nevil Maskelyne, Anthony Sheperd, Richard Farmer and William Wales. This was described as a very valuable paper by Abraham Rees, and apparently contained several valuable remarks , but it was criticized as a subject of no great importance by the Philosophical Magazine .
