About the Author: Rahma Al-Mahrooqi is Director of Sultan Qaboos Universitys Humanities Research Center and an Associate Professor in the universitys English Department. During her 21 years of service at the university, she has taught a variety of courses in language, communication, research, and sociolinguistics, always seeking to inspire and transform her students by example. She has coordinated tertiary English courses and an ESP program for the universitys College of Science and for almost 4 years was Director of the campuss Language Center. Dr. Al-Mahrooqi has published widely on English language teaching and learning in Oman, with major focus areas in teaching reading, literature, and English communication skills. Currently, she is engaged in funded nationwide research on areas of language instruction and, for the Humanities Research Center, is pursuing research on identity, cognition, and emotion, and their relationship to language learning.
Vijay Singh Thakur is an Assistant Professor of English Language and Linguistics in the Department of Languages and Translation of Dhofar University (DU), Sultanate of Oman. He holds a doctorate degree in Applied Sociolinguistics. His main publications include Discourse Analysis of a Novel: Theory and Method and Sociolinguistic Perspectives of Politeness in Communication. He is a member on the editorial board of The Asia TEFL Journal, International Journal for the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning and Journal of English as an International Language. His research interests include Discourse Stylistics, Cross-Cultural Pragmatics and TESOL Pedagogy.
Adrian Roscoe, currently Professor of English at Omans Sultan Qaboos University, has also held chairs of English in South Africa, New Zealand, and Malawi, and a visiting professorship at the State University of New York. With interests in post-colonial literature and writing across the curriculum, his publications include books, essays, and reviews. Recent titles include The Common Touch: Popular Literature from the Elizabethans to the Restoration (with Paul Scanlon),The Columbia Guide to Central African Literature in English, and (with Rahma Al-Mahrooqi) Language, Literature, and Identity: Modern Perspectives.
