Preface: "The book is designed not only as a textbook for the use of Normal Schools and Normal Classes, but also as a handbook for the use of students who are preparing to teach, but have not an opportunity of taking a course of professional instruction. It is designed also to afford help to those who are already engaged in teaching, and are desirous of improvement by professional reading." First published in 1883.
