How Many Mice Make an Elephant? And Other Big Questions about Size and Distance introduces children to this tricky math concept in a fun, relatable way.
Fantastically written by Tracey Turner, questions such as "How many high jumps to the moon?" and "How many ice cubes make an iceberg?" get children to think about just how high, how big, and how far things are, as well as teaching them the math to work it out! The logic behind each comparison is explained in clear, simple steps for children to follow along, helping them to reach the answer. Beautiful illustrations by Aaron Cushley couldn't be further from a math text book, making learning math a truly fun experience.

Gr 1-5-Turner offers an appealing math book. Although it may not be a go-to for read-alouds, teachers could use parts of this delightful title for challenges, warm-ups, or exit tickets. It would be especially useful in units about distance or measurement. The text explores large numbers, size, and distance and makes those concepts comprehensible to students. Popular subjects (animals, oceans, dinosaurs, and space) are included along with easy math and calculator tips. Each spread features a different topic and a significant amount of text. At times the book feels a little cluttered and text-heavy. However, it is much more fun than typical math resources. One page features enjoyable activity challenges; the text could have included more activities to strengthen reader comprehension. Cushley's playful illustrations will appeal to elementary students. Human characters are depicted with different skin tones, and there is a balanced representation of gender, a significant consideration in STEM materials. Back pages include an index and answers to challenge questions. VERDICT An engaging book that introduces children to large numbers, sizes, and distances.
