There were two editions in English. The first was published in 1872, based on the fourth German edition. Here are the dates of the eight German editions: 1863, 1865 (2nd), 1868 (3rd), 1871 (4th), 1873 (5th), 1877 (6th), 1881 (7th), 1886 (8th). Heinrich Frey died in 1890. In the edition offered here, p. 624 is the last page of the index. It is followed by pp. 625-660, which are "Price-Lists of Microscope Firms." "The earliest German work to deal comprehensively with microtechnique. Of the twenty-two chapters, five deal with the instrument, five with the principles of microtomy, and the rest with the application of these principles to the various tissues and organs" (Bracegirdle, History of Microtechnique, p. 43). About the Former Owner ROMYN HITCHCOCK (1851-1923), who signed this copy: He was the first editor of the American Quarterly Microscopical Journal, and then the American Monthly Microscopical Journal. His obituary in the journal Nature begins: "We have received information of the death last November [1923], at Baltimore, of Prof. Romyn Hitchcock, who did much to further the study of microscopy.".
