"The War in the Middle East during the First World War" traces the most important military and political developments between 1914 and 1918 in an understandable and coherent way. From the battles at the Suez Canal and the Battle of Gallipoli to the Caucasus War, Mesopotamia and Kut al Amara to the Arab uprising, the attacks on the Hejaz Railway and the British advance on Jerusalem and Damascus, a comprehensive overview of a theater of war that was far more than a side front emerges.
The focus is not only on battles and generals. The book explains why the Ottoman Empire entered the war on the side of Germany, what interests Britain, France and Russia pursued in the Middle East, and why supplies, railways, water and distances were decisive for the outcome of many operations.
A special focus is on the political developments within the Ottoman Empire. The book shows how Arab reform movements developed, why Hussein ibn Ali began the uprising against Constantinople in 1916 and what role Faisal, Arab officers, tribal leaders and T. E. Lawrence actually played. In the process, widespread simplifications are also cleared up: The Arab revolt was not a united uprising of all Arabs, and Lawrence was neither its inventor nor its sole military leader.
The contradictory diplomacy of the major European powers is also understandably classified. The Hussein McMahon Correspondence, the Sykes Picot Agreement and the Balfour Declaration show how Britain raised different expectations about the future of the same region during the war. These decisions were to have a considerable influence on the political reorganization after 1918.
The book also deals with the dark sides of war. The deportations and genocide of the Armenians, hunger, disease, forced mobilization and the suffering of the civilian population make it clear that the war was not only fought on the fronts.
With the British victory at Megiddo in 1918, the Ottoman front in Palestine and Syria collapsed. But the story did not end with the armistice of Mudros. The mandate rule of Great Britain and France, Faisal's failed kingdom in Syria, the Treaty of Sèvres, the Turkish War of Independence and finally Lausanne show how difficult the transition from the Ottoman order to the new world of states in the Middle East was.
This book is aimed at history buffs who want to get a well-founded and easy-to-understand overview of the First World War in the Middle East. It is deliberately not a special scientific study for historians, but a factually narrated introduction that combines military events with political backgrounds and long-term consequences.
An understandable journey through the war that shook the Ottoman Empire and decisively shaped the political landscape of the modern Middle East.
Parts of the text have been revised with the support of artificial intelligence. It was used as a tool in structuring, research and linguistic elaboration. The contents have been carefully edited, historically classified and checked for factual consistency. In this way, the book combines modern working methods with the claim to offer a serious, understandable and high-quality presentation.
