Midnight Crew (Paperback)

Paperback. In a rotting city, one ex-cop is all that stands between good and evil. When notorious Chicago mobster Barney Bryan is brutally murdered, ex-cop Lenny Mallock knows the killing is more than another underworld execution. Bryan's assassin has vanished with a briefcase containing plans for a mysterious operation-and information stolen from government networks that was never supposed to fall into criminal hands. As Mallock joins forces with Internal Affairs detective Celina Varga, the trail leads them through corrupt cops, professional thieves, federal secrets, and a conspiracy far larger than anything either of them could have anticipated. But Mallock soon realizes the murders were just the beginning. The stolen files reveal evidence of a meticulously planned high-stakes operation, coded accounts of previous crimes, and access to systems that should have been untouchable. Someone powerful wants the information back, and anyone who gets too close to the truth becomes a target. Meanwhile, competing criminals converge on what they believe could be a fortune, unaware that the real prize is something far more dangerous. With bodies piling up across Chicago, Mallock uncovers evidence that the corruption reaches far beyond the city's streets-and a killer who seems to anticipate his every move. As the investigation spirals toward a deadly collision between thieves, killers, cops, and federal agents, Mallock discovers that everyone has been chasing pieces of the same secret. What began with the murder of a gangster leads to the terrifying possibility that someone has been using law enforcement to build a criminal empire. In a city where no one can be trusted, Mallock must survive long enough to expose the truth before the people behind it erase every loose end-including him. This item is printed on demand.
