Item description from seller

Midrash Rabba, Sefer Vayikra [Leviticus]. Józefów (Юзефовъ): Printed under the authority of B. Zetter, [ca. 19th century]. 8vo. . Hebrew text in double columns, with a richly ornamented title page printed in blue ink, bordered with foliate scrollwork and bearing both Hebrew and Russian imprints. Bound in full calf, with wear as depicted, embossed in the distinctive Eastern European “Kabbalistic” style. A rare form of spiritual binding deeply tied to Jewish mystical tradition. The design of this Hebrew Midrash binding echoes the Hamsa, the ancient hand of protection. At its center, a radiant rosette blossoms like divine light—perhaps alluding to the Ain Sof or the Shekhinah. The swirling vines are more than decoration: they suggest the Tree of Life, the Sefirot, and the intricate pathways of divine wisdom in Kabbalah. This binding wasn’t only crafted to protect the book - it was made to guard the soul of the reader. Though issued under the imprint of Vilna’s B. Zetter, the book was printed in Józefów, a significant center of Jewish learning and printing under Tsarist rule. The Midrash Rabba on Leviticus is itself a tapestry of moral, legal, and mystical commentary—making this volume a unified expression of sacred text and sacred design. A rare and moving survival of a devotional artifact where binding, symbolism, and study converge.…

Store description

Making the impossible possible. That is what I love about the antiquarian book trade. Books have had to endure the ravages of time, from mere careless handling to the burning pyres of Savonarola and modern war. Someone may ask me for a 15th century book on witchcraft or express interest in a biblical manuscript, and I have to seek out these treasures from the flea markets of Paris and alleys of Istanbul to New York Fifth Avenue apartments and the ritzy auction rooms of London.
