This book explores what happened when artworks by 28 international artists and architects were installed one summer in the village of Bournville, in England - the site of one of Europe's largest chocolate factories.
Bournville represents one man's vision of an ideal place to live and work. The village was established in 1895 by George Cadbury, a philanthropist and chocolate factory owner, for his workers. This experiment in town planning was the perfect location for a recent exhibition, which explored the proposal that Utopia can only be understood in the act of attempting to achieve it. Art works were placed in the grounds of the chocolate factory and in public spaces around the village, as well as in the buildings of the local university and museum. With full colour photography throughout, the book provides a fascinating visual record of the impact of art on this historic architectural location. With a selection of essays by art critics, architects and historians, In the Midst of Things is much more than a simple record of an exhibition: it is a meditation on art, architecture, design and the gap between ideals and realities.
