Synopsis
Based on biblical accounts, The Mighty Men of King David chronicles the life of the shepherd boy beyond his famed battle with Goliath. From a unique perspective, the novel highlights David's encounter, relationship, and bond with those who came to be known as his Mighty Men. The novel creatively brings each character to life by weaving in fictional personalities and stories that tie in beautifully into the factual events revealed in Scripture. With heart, the novel highlights the seldom told story of a group of outcasts taken in by David, and their extraordinary transformation into Mighty Men. The novel reveals that David's rise as king over God's chosen people was not attained through his merits alone, but by the grace of God and the help of his beloved Mighty Men.
About the Author
Mario A. Gutierrez: In 1997, Mario served in the United States Marine Corps. While on leave, he was arrested with his brother Hugo. This incident spiraled a series of life-changing events and marked the beginning of a different life for him. In 2000, Mario was found guilty and sentenced to five years in prison; he served three years due to good behavior. While in prison, Mario came to a saving knowledge of Jesus Christ and accepted Him as Lord of his life. A decision that would have never taken place had he never been incarcerated. Behind bars, Mario took a special interest in the story of David. He dissected the Scriptures and read commentaries and books to gain a better understanding. It was then that, with no writing experience but driven by passion and creativity, he began to write the first chapters of The Mighty Men of King David. When Mario was released from prison, he joined the local fellowship at Templo Bautista Hispano in Perris, CA. He serves as youth leader, Deacon, and sound director. He also serves at a local prison ministry. In 2007, Mario married Arleth Perez, they reside in Bonsall, CA. with their two sons, Avran Cy and Esai Lex. On April 9, 2012, Mario was granted a full pardon by the State of California. Hugo E. Gutierrez: At age 18, Hugo became what society considers "scum." He was charged, found guilty, and sentenced to a California State Prison, where he is serving a 21-year sentence. During the first years of his incarceration, Hugo repented and fell at the feet of his Lord and Savior, Jesus. He understood that God had a better life for him, even behind bars. As co-author, Hugo is heavily involved in the editing, character development, and structure of plot and story of The Mighty Men of King David. He and his brother have developed an unconventional process: Mario writes the rough drafts, mails them to Hugo in prison, and Mario makes the corrections indicated by Hugo when the edited copy is received in the mail. In prison, Hugo serves the Lord in the ministry of the Word. He encourages prisoners to go all-out in their walk as Christians. In his teaching and preaching he stresses repentance towards God and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. Hugo's family eagerly awaits his release in 2016.
