Kindergarten-Grade 5?Inspired by one of Chu's landscape paintings, Massey's story celebrates the power of the imagination. While viewing "Cattle Hill 1994" during a museum field trip, Milton uses his mind's eye to travel within the painting. (Readers, however, are unaware of his existence almost until the end of the book). The obvious story line features an adventurous cow wandering alone through a farmland, viewing the world with wonder. Finally Milton's teacher, interrupting both his concentration and the story, demands to know where the boy has been. He can only "moo" in reply, and some of his classmates (and later even the teacher) are willing to credit him with a good imagination. The singsong, rhyming text is marginal in comparison to the art. Chu's stark style, reminiscent of Grant Wood's work with an added twist of surrealism, presents an interesting variety of visual perspectives. Share this title with other picture books that feature paintings coming to life, such as Johnny Alcorn's Rembrandt's Beret (Tambourine, 1991), Ewa Zadrzynska's The Girl with a Watering Can (Chameleon, 1989), and Diane Stanley's The Gentleman and the Kitchen Maid (Dial, 1994). What at first appears to be a story about a runaway cow turns out to pack a little surprise?the adventures are actually the invention of a boy on a class field trip, daydreaming in front of a painting. Massey's concept, similar to Ella's Trip to the Museum (Children's Forecasts, June 3), is intriguing; however, it is strangled by awkward rhymes and cloying verses ("We were at the museum today;/ where were you, out to play?/ If you think it's fun to disobey,/ next time at school is where you'll stay!"). The tidy lines and cheery-faced creatures in Chu's grainy colored-pencil drawings provide only a low-key energy, not nearly strong enough to power this outing. Ages 5-up.
