A Mind Shaped by Poverty: Ten Things Educators Should Know

Many students living in poverty enter school with barriers that interfere with learning and make it more difficult for them to achieve. In the fundamental education guide A Mind Shaped by Poverty: Ten Things Educators Should Know, author and educator Regenia M. Rawlinson explores how poverty affects academic success and what educators can do to solve the problem.

The poverty mindset is one of the most pervasive obstacles to overcome, one that can infiltrate the classroom and mask destructive and self-defeating behaviors. Educators must help students overcome the poverty mindset to foster success. In A Mind Shaped by Poverty, Rawlinson shares details from her poverty-stricken childhood, and how it shaped her beliefs about herself. She provides examples of how these feelings play out in the classroom and offers strategies to help students overcome the effects of a poverty mindset.

Rawlinson provides teachers the guidance they need to confront the scourge of poverty and banish the influence of a mindset that has led many to frustrating and unproductive lives. A Mind Shaped by Poverty can help you enhance students confidence and improve academic achievement.
