Mint

If it exists, it invoices.

In a gleaming metropolis where daylight runs on salary and civic virtue is billed by the second, life is an endless loop of automated mercy. Benches cost three cents a minute. Shade is billed per breath. Eye contact, casual conversation, and laughter are available through tiered, pre-approved subscriptions. Over every citizen's head hovers a halo tuned to the color of their birth day, rotating in seamless harmony with the Lattice-an all-encompassing municipal network that demands perfect posture, audited gratitude, and unwavering calm.

For Elias, a Thursday-born clerk assigned to Predictive Subscriptions, survival is simple: wake up, approve transactions, smile for the diagnostics, and let the weekly Universal Zero reset his debt. Grief and anger have been engineered out of the glossary. When people vanish from their desks or cafeteria tables, they aren't gone; they've simply entered an "administrative state," replaced by clean tiles, fresh air, and an expectation of gratitude.

Then the seams begin to tear.

It starts with a lagging reflection in a washroom mirror. A quiet whisper threaded through the air vents. An unbilled memory carved into raw concrete: THE SPACE WHERE THEY WERE. And Davin-a stranger with a Sunday-red halo who sits near enough to share an unmonetized breath.

As small, forbidden truths begin to leak through the city's sterile facade, Elias discovers that the greatest threat to a flawless system isn't an army or an explosion-it's a single unpriced feeling, a stolen silence, and a sentence the algorithm cannot silence: Near is enough.

Lyrical, razor-sharp, and chillingly prescient, Mint is a high-concept dystopian novel exploring algorithmic control, late-stage surveillance, and the stubborn persistence of the human spirit inside a world engineered to forget it.
