From the page facing the title page: This remarkable portraiture of society of the nineteenth century, to which Victor Hugo has given the richest twenty five years of his life, is divided into five distinct novels, under the general title of Les Miserables. Each novel is complete. They will be published and sold separately in uniform binding. They are entitled: I Fantine; II Cosette; III Marius; IV Idyl of the Rue Plumer and Epic of the Rue Saint-Denis; V Jean Valjean. Victor-Marie Hugo, (1802 1885) was a French Romantic author, poet, essayist, playwright, journalist, human rights activist and politician. His most famous works are the novels The Hunchback of Notre-Dame (1831) and Les Misérables (1862). Les Misérables is considered one of the greatest novels of the 19th century. Les Misérables has been popularized through numerous adaptations for film, television, and the stage, including a musical. This book bound in sturdy, blind embossed green cloth is in very good condition. The binding is in near fine condition. All pages in the book have some brown spotting but mostly in the margins and not in the text block. A very collectible copy of the extremely rare first U.S. edition, published in the same year as was the first French edition.
