Raimundo Cabrera Bosch (1852-1923), ensayista, periodista, abogado y patriota, fue una figura intelectual de primera importancia en la Cuba del siglo XIX. Nacido en La Habana y educado en G�ines, hijo de un obrero tabaquero, a los 8 a�os gan� una medalla de oro del Ayuntamiento g�inero como el mejor estudiante de la Villa. A los 17 a�os fue tomado prisionero para luego ser encarcelado y confinado a Isla de Pinos.

En este libro, Cabrera narra c�mo hizo el viaje de Bataban� a Isla de Pinos con 37 deportados procedentes de distintas partes de Cuba que iban a ser arrojados a una isla pobre, despoblada, sin industria, sin agricultura, sin trabajo, llegando all� con la incertidumbre de lo desconocido, pregunt�ndose qu� nuevas angustias y miserias les tendr�a reservado all� el destino.

La lectura del texto constituye una experiencia placentera, tanto por la capacidad evocadora del autor como el acertado empleo de recursos narrativos y l�ricos - Raimundo Cabrera tambi�n fue poeta - y resulta asimismo un valioso testimonio del modo en que transcurr�a la vida en G�ines, las caracter�sticas de su gente y c�mo la posibilidad de obtener la independencia impact� esa comunidad.

Nacido en La Habana el 9 de marzo de 1852, fue educado en G�ines. Hijo de un obrero tabaquero, permaneciendo ligado a la Villa, por el afecto y la actividad patri�tica, a lo largo de su vida. Estudi� sus primeras letras en G�ines a base de muchos sacrificios, despuntando desde muy joven como escritor erudito.Prosigui� sus estudios secundarios en La Habana, ayudado por otro gran g�inero, Francisco Calcagno, el que le propici�, por medio de una beca, la oportunidad de estudiar en el colegio San Francisco de As�s en el barrio habanero de El Cerro, del cual Calcagno era profesor. Milit� en el Partido Liberal pero nunca aspir� a cargos electivos.Termin� sus d�as como presidente de la Sociedad Econ�mica de Amigos del Pa�s, muriendo en La Habana el 21 de mayo de 1923.
