Miscellanea: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, and Essays, on Historical, Theological, and Miscellaneous Subjects

Miscellanea: Comprising Reviews, Lectures, And Essays, On Historical, Theological, And Miscellaneous Subjects by M. J. Spalding is a two-volume collection of historical, theological, and miscellaneous writings. The volume opens with an Introductory Address addressing the intolerant spirit of the times and defending Catholic liberty within a republic, arguing against mob violence and for the proper balance between civil and religious rights. The contents broadly cover Church History (Early Ages, Middle Ages, Reformation and Since) and a wide array of theological and miscellaneous topics, including examinations of Catholic doctrine, the Spanish Inquisition, and contrasts between Catholic and Protestant nations. The author, Archbishop of Baltimore, furnishes persuasive Catholic apologetics and historical analysis, often challenging Protestant interpretations and defending the cause of true Religion and civil liberty. The edition announced and prepared by Spalding himself includes corrections and additions, such as a Pastoral Letter on papal infallibility. The work exemplifies 19th-century Catholic historiography and apologetics, combining historical survey with doctrinal and political argument to defend Catholic teaching and liberty in America.
