Sir William (1628-1699), a noted essayist of his time, employed Jonathan Swift as his secretary; Temple's Miscellanea was first issued in 1690; Swift republished the collection two years after the Baronet's death. This is a Very Good (Plus) copy, printed in London by Benjamin Tooke. Full leather binding of smoothe calf, decoratively stamped on the covers; four raised bands on the spine, deoratively stamped in gilt; red compartment with titling in gilt. Clean text; 368 pages; page ends sprinkled in red. The textblock is pristine, as bright as it was in 1701. There is an armorial bookplate on the front paste-down: ["The Right Hon. the Earl of Berkshire Lord Marshall of England. anno 1720." Assumed by Quercus to be Henry Bowes Howard, 4th Earl of Berkshire, 1686-1757.] Rubbing to the spine and two small splits at the ends of the rear cover. Corners lightly pushed; some scuffing and faint staining that establish the character of the book. A superior copy in its original binding. Later Printing. Full-Leather.
