A very good copy of this four volume set of the works of Oliver Goldsmith. Uniformly bound in contemporary three-quarter calf. Six spine compartments divided by raised bands. Brown leather panels for the title and for the editor name and volume number. Otherwise the compartments contain elaborate gilt decoration. There is minor wear to the leather of the spines, and more significant scuffing to the corners. The marbled paper boards are rubbed. However, the bindings are all strong and square with no cracking to the hinges. All edges are marbled to match with the marbled paper boards and end-papers, all of which are undamaged. Inside the contents are clean and bright with no ownership inscriptions or other markings of any kind. Each volume has an attractive frontispiece, all of which retain their protective glassine cover. Oliver Goldsmith (1730-1774), Anglo-Irish man of letters, poet and playwright wrote The Vicar of Wakefield (1766). Goldsmith stood alone and did not subscribe to nor start any school. He died at forty-six a philosopher at heart, a kind old soul and friend to many including Dr. Samuel Johnson. Overall a very nice copy indeed, with a magnificent shelf appearance. A heavy set which may require additional postage.
