Contemporary full calf, gilt compartments, original red & green leather labels, backstrip chipped and scuffed, rebacked at some point with new endpapers, binding is rather stiff, title rather fragile, marginal staining and toning to most of the contents, more pronounced to some rear leaves, in spite of this an interesting title bibliographically, the fifth volume of this collected edition of Rousseau's works and the second appearance(?) in English of the 'Social Contract'. This was originally published in French in 1762 and was first translated into English in 1764. The rest of the volume contains 'Anecdotes relative to the Persecution of Mr. J. J. Rousseau' and 'A Project for a Perpetual Peace'. Something of a reading copy. 184 (Social Compact [sic]); 166pp. (Persecution & Perpetual Peace). Further photographs available on request.
