Witty critique and context for Fielding’s The Miser
This analysis situates the comedy within the English stage, comparing it to Moliere and Plautus while evaluating its moral stakes and theatrical craft.
The book argues that The Miser blends homage and invention, offering a lively look at money, marriage, and manipulation without becoming a mere lesson. It notes the work’s place in the drama of its era and discusses how characters’ voices and social behaviors are portrayed on stage.- Learn how the play blends classical influences with Fielding’s own comic approach.
- Explore how money, marriage, and family dynamics drive the plot and the humor.
- See why critics highlight character voice and social behavior as key features.
- Discover how this edition frames the drama for modern readers and theater historians.
Ideal for readers of 18th‑century drama, literary criticism, and theater history who want grounding in context plus careful analysis of character and theme.

Store description
