About the Author
There are a few consistent threads that run through the career of Jack Bick, author of BE MISSION CRITICAL. These threads include journalism, sales and mentoring that are all driven by his desire to help people; 90% of his clients are successful, land jobs they want. His most recent service includes volunteering at an employment ministry, Career Alliance, and as The Career Coach with RESULTS. This endeavor might seem to be a complete change from his previous career as a publisher/journalist/salesman, yet a close look shows it to be just a pivot. During most of his career he was the point person entering a major city as a stranger and emerging 90 days later with a newly-born local business journal. In those 90 days, he had to network, find candidates, hire, train and lead them to the goal, then mentor. Job search and career coaching involved many of the same elements. In fact, many of those people still contact him when they are faced with career challenges and decisions. His career began at the age of 12 when he founded a micro-newspaper for a few hundred people in a suburb of St. Louis. That meager start in journalism carried through to the high school newspaper, PR chair (and president) of his fraternity, the college student newspaper and a bachelor’s degree from highly rated Missouri School of Journalism at the University of Missouri. Even his service in the U.S. Army involved journalism/photography in South Vietnam where he was awarded two Army Commendation Medals (one for valor, one for service), two Bronze Stars (both for service) and an Air Medal (for combat assaults). His professional career included assignments as a photographer, reporter, editor, circulation manager, salesperson, sales manager and publisher. He was successful in newspapers, magazines, online publishing and producing business expos and award events. He has been recognized for excellence by the Dallas Press Club, Texas Community Newspapers Association, Small Business Administration as well as the Plano (TX) Business Person of the Year and the Allen (TX) Business of the Year. The Small Business Administration awarded him the Media Advocate of the Year. “My career put me in touch with many fine people,” he said, “They helped me, and I helped them. That is the essence of a fulfilling career and a fulfilling life.” Bick has been married to Angie since 1970. They have three children and three grandchildren.
