Mission Life In The Islands Of The Pacific: Being A Narrative Of The Life And Labours Of The Rev. A. Buzacott, by Aaron Buzacott and James Povey Sunderland, is a memorial portrait of a Congregational missionary in the South Pacific. Drawing on autobiographical notes, diaries, letters, and documents, the volume traces Buzacott’s education, conversion, and ordination in 1827, his early work in Tahiti, and his long, transformative service in Rarotonga from 1828 to 1857. It highlights his collaboration with John Williams and other missionaries, his role as an architect and builder, translator, and educator, and the establishment of schools, printing, and the native College for evangelists. The narrative recounts trials—incendiary attacks, famines, cyclones, and epidemics—and the steady spiritual awakening among islanders, including the first Christian converts and the growth of the church under Makea. It also includes translations and press work that produced the Rarotongan Bible, and the final years of mission work in Samoa and Western Polynesia. Prefaced by Henry Allon, the work offers a vivid history of missions, civilization, and faith in the Pacific.
