M?moire Et Observations Sur La Perforation De La Membrane Du Tympan, Pour R?tablir L'ouie Chez Les Sourds-Muets

Mémoire Et Observations Sur La Perforation De La Membrane Du Tympan, Pour Rétablir L'ouie Chez Les Sourds-Muets by F.-A. De Neubourg. This medical memoir from the early 19th century documents the development and application of a surgical procedure to perforate the tympanic membrane in order to restore hearing in deaf-mute individuals. It discusses the historical context, the theoretical justification for the operation, and a series of patient observations illustrating varying degrees of success. The author details improvements to the instrument and method, including a designed tympanotore to create an opening with loss of substance and to prevent occlusion. The work also includes a medical commission report approving the method and notes on the education and social integration of patients after surgery. Together, the memoir presents early 19th-century advances in otology and the social dimension of deafness treatment.
