Modal Hanon

Modal Hanon: 50 Exercises for the Intermediate to Advanced Pianist by Peter Deneff is a keyboard technique and sheet music exercise book created for intermediate to advanced pianists. The collection presents fifty technical exercises that expand keyboard fluency while introducing a broader melodic vocabulary through modal concepts drawn from multiple musical traditions. Topics include non-Western scales, Greek, Turkish, and Far Eastern modes, odd time signatures, transposable exercises, and musical patterns that can be adapted to a wide range of creative and performance settings.

The book includes written exercises in standard music notation together with an organized index of scales for convenient reference during daily practice and long-term study. Rather than focusing on repertoire, the collection provides structured technical studies that can be incorporated into warmups, composition practice, improvisation, and performance preparation. The exercises encourage flexibility while supporting finger control, dexterity, coordination, and musical awareness across different tonal systems and rhythmic approaches.

Drawing from jazz, world music, pop, concert music, and film music influences, the book offers practical material that helps players broaden their musical language while developing stronger keyboard technique. Because many of the exercises are designed to be transposed and modified, they can remain valuable long after the initial practice session, providing fresh opportunities for exploration and creative application. The combination of technical development and modal study makes this volume a useful addition to a pianist's personal library, teaching studio, or academic music collection.

Whether for practice, lessons, or personal musical growth, Modal Hanon offers a focused collection of exercises that encourages continued exploration at the keyboard.
