The Moderate Monarchy, Or Principles Of The British Constitution, Described In A Narrative Of The Life And Maxims Of Alfred The Great And His Counsellors. From The German Of Albert V. Haller by Albrecht Von Baron Haller is presented here in an English edition with translator’s notes and commentary. The work is a translation of Haller’s German romance about Alfred the Great, accompanied by Francis Steinitz’s introductory prefatory material and extensive notes applying the historical narrative to the present state of the British constitution. It is organized into six books that trace Alfred’s life as hero, lover, legislator, sage, and counselor, followed by a sixth book on navigation, and concludes with a theoretical synthesis on the foundations and forms of government. The volume situates Alfred within a broader constitutional theory, balancing monarchy with aristocratic and popular elements, and surveys Anglo-Saxon law, governance, taxation, and civil institutions through historical and philosophical lens. The translation and commentary aim to illuminate the transformation of national life and the ideals of constitutional moderation in Britain.
