Moderation In A Modern Nation: How to Break the Loop of Modern Excess

Modern life has made nearly every pleasure easier to access and harder to leave alone. Food arrives on demand. Entertainment never ends. Sexual stimulation is everywhere. Substances promise instant relief. Gambling, scrolling, shopping, and endless novelty turn spare moments into opportunities for another hit of stimulation.

In Moderation In A Modern Nation, Mitchell Thompson examines what happens when the natural friction between desire and satisfaction disappears. Drawing from his own health crisis, professional experience, and the modern behaviors he has watched become increasingly normal, Thompson argues that the problem is not pleasure itself. The problem is losing command over it.

Through the "Four Horsemen of Modern Gluttony" - food, sex, substances, and gambling - the book explores how repeated access, instant gratification, and constant stimulation can quietly reshape appetite, intimacy, attention, and precious time.

But this isn't a call for deprivation or a joyless life of restriction. It's a case for rebuilding the boundaries that allow pleasure to remain pleasure.

Moderation In A Modern Nation presents moderation as a form of command: the ability to create space between impulse and action, redesign your environment, establish rules before temptation arrives, and deliberately choose what deserves a place in your life.

The goal isn't less life. The goal is to have more control over the life you already have.
