A Modern Approach to Classical Repertoire - Part 1: Guitar Technique (Modern Approach to Classical Guitar)

A Modern Approach to Classical Repertoire - Part 1 by composer and educator Charles Duncan is a graded anthology of classical guitar solo pieces for easy to intermediate players seeking stylistic depth and musical variety. Designed as a supplement to Books Two and Three of A Modern Approach to Classical Guitar, this collection helps developing guitarists expand repertoire while reinforcing core technique and musical understanding.

Written for solo classical guitar in standard notation only, the book strengthens note reading and stylistic awareness. The sequenced selections provide accessible technical challenges while encouraging expressive playing. Students refining phrasing, articulation, tone control, balance, and rhythmic clarity will find repertoire that builds coordination and interpretive confidence in a clear progression.

The graded structure allows players to build fluency while exploring works associated with Sor, Giuliani, Carulli, Krieger, Caroso, DeVisee, Couperin, Telemann, and others. Short dances, études, and lyrical pieces offer variety in tempo and character, keeping practice engaging while strengthening left- and right-hand technique. The anthology serves as both a technical bridge and an introduction to Baroque and Classical style.

Ideal for lessons, focused home practice, or informal performance, this collection supports continued growth at the easy to intermediate level and stands as a curated classical guitar solo repertoire resource.
