Description:

There is a stain and abraded hole over the date on the title page, but 17 can be seen and the whole date might be 1703. The book dates from the first half of the 18th century. The date at the end of the author's Dedicatory has also been partially abraded leaving a small hole in the page. An old 2.5x3" book plate on top of the frontis plate. There is writing on the blank verso side of the frontis, "On Board His Majesty's Ship Warwick" with signatures and dates 1757. The book has the same collation as the first edition:[16],127,[1]p.,10 leaves of plates. Page 127(the last page of the bibliography and the blank verso page)is missing. There is also one plate entirely missing. The plates present and identified at the end of the book are Plates I, II, III, V, VI, VII and VIII. There is another plate at the back with identification missing which is only 80% complete and laid down on backing. The frontispiece plate has loss at the edges and is not identified with a plate number. All of the pages are darkened but there is only occasional light foxing and soiling. Several leaves have creasing or chipping at the corners. One leaf has chipping in the margins along the edges to about 1/2". One leaf has a 2" x 3/4" piece missing (without loss of text). The title page has a few small chips into about 1/4". The frontispiece has small tears and chips at the edges plus a 1/2" x 3/4" piece from the edge. Five of the plates have light to moderate red stains. The plates have some soiling and wear at the edges with creases but for the most part limited to the margins. The folding plate (Plate III)is present but shows some small loss at the fold. There are several lengthwise wrinkles and creases from misfolding along with a couple 1" tears. There is an old partially removed bookplate upside down on the rear endpaper. The book has been rebound in a plain burgundy colored half leather binding with buckram covers and new endpapers. It is about 6.5" tall and the binding dates from the 20th century. Edges and spine ends are moderately scuffed but gilt lettering on spine is bright. The binding is tight and in good condition.
