The author traces the development of modern French music from the turn of the century to the present day--a golden age of inventiveness and great compositional achievement--and relates the music to changing social, literary, and artistic trends both inside and outside France. The author critically analyzes the works and discusses the lives of leading early composers: Faure; d'Indy; Rousel, Koechlin; Ravel; Dukas and Debussy--as well such later composers as Messiaen; Jolivet; Boulez; and Varese. The main emphasis is on the part played by 20th century French composers, especially Debussy, in bringing about the new movement in music.
