This edition of Lü Simian's Modern History of China comprises five pieces, four of which were never published during the author's lifetime. It thus provides a unique window into the perspectives of a Republican-era scholar on the modern Chinese history he was living through. Modern History of China is composed of five individual works: Lectures on Modern Chinese History, A Preliminary Compilation of Early Modern Chinese History, An Outline of China's Recent Hundred Years, A Supplementary Compilation of Early Modern Chinese Cultural History, and The Russo-Japanese War. All five works were written before 1949, covering the period of Chinese history from the Opium Wars to the eve of the War of Resistance against Japan, with some references to Sino-Western contacts prior to the modern era. The five texts offer a range of approaches: chronological narrative (in Lectures on Modern Chinese History), thematic commentary and analysis (in A Preliminary Compilation of Early Modern Chinese History and An Outline of China's Recent Hundred Years), institutional history (in A Supplementary Compilation of Early Modern Chinese Cultural History), and a comprehensive narrative account of a single historical event (in The Russo-Japanese War). Through the pen of a great historian and the lens of a Republican-era scholar, readers will gain a complete and multi-dimensional understanding of China's modern history in the post-traditional era.
