A delightful mid twentieth century edition of Meredith's celebrated sonnet sequence, from the library of science-fiction author Brian Aldiss. A lovely 1948 edition of Meredith's 'novella in verse' about the failure of a marriage. The tale is told in a sequence of fifty sonnets.With an introduction from Cecil Day-Lewis.The work first appeared in 1862 as part of the volume 'Modern Love and Poems of the English Roadside'.The personal copy of celebrated English science fiction author Brian Aldiss, best known for his 'Helliconia' trilogy. Associated with the British New Wave of science fiction, Aldiss received two Hugo Awards, one Nebula Award and one John W. Campbell Memorial Award.Inscribed in pencil by Aldiss to the head of the front free endpaper.Loosely inserted is a provenance notice signed by the executor of Aldiss's estate, his daughter Wendy.With the ex-libris ink stamp of Dr Martin Clarke, Cambridge 1918 to front pastedown. In the publisher's original cloth binding, with unclipped dust wrapper. Externally, fine. Pencil inscription to front free endpaper.
