Modern Magic: The Exploration of Witchcraft and Magic in Historical Context

"Modern Magic" by Maximilian Schele de Vere delves into the historical and cultural phenomena of witchcraft and magic, exploring their roots and manifestations across different societies. The text examines the widespread belief in witchcraft, particularly during the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, when fear and superstition led to the persecution and execution of countless individuals accused of practicing magic. The author discusses the role of the Church and secular authorities in these persecutions, highlighting the complex interplay between religion, law, and superstition. The book also explores the psychological and social factors that contributed to the belief in witchcraft, such as the human tendency to attribute unexplained events to supernatural causes. De Vere provides detailed accounts of famous witch trials, illustrating the often tragic consequences of these beliefs. Furthermore, the text examines the distinction between black and white magic, the former associated with malevolent practices and the latter with benevolent ones. The author also touches upon the concept of necromancy, or the summoning of spirits, as a form of magic practiced in various cultures. Throughout the book, de Vere emphasizes the importance of understanding these historical phenomena to gain insight into the human psyche and the enduring fascination with the supernatural.
